    Kanyakumari Temple

KanyaKumari located in the southern most point of the Indian peninsula, is a small but very famous city. It draws its fame because of its rich history, culture and most importantly because of the many legends associated with the KanyaKumari temple, after which it is named.

KanyaKumari is named after Goddess KanyaKumari. The KanyaKumari temple, is located at the very point where the three water bodies (Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea) meet. What is interesting to note is the colorful sand that surrounds the temple premises and the beaches. According to legend, Goddess KanyaKumari was set to marry Lord Shiva, but he failed to show up on the wedding day. As a result, all the food cooked for the wedding remained unused and in course of time, turned into stone. The local people consider the different colored grains on the sand here to be the grains of the wedding.

Interestingly about seven kilometers away from the town areas is Marunthuvazh Malai, which abounds in medicinal herbs. According to legend, Lord Hanuman, dropped a piece of earth from the Sanjeevani Mountain he was carrying on the way to Lanka. Sage Agastya is also said to have inhabited in a village close form here – named Agastheeswaram.
